Veck
Veck is a freeware space shooter inspired by Robotron: 2084, Geometry Wars and
many vector games of the early 1980’s. The player controls a small craft, on a
single screen, able to move and fire in multiple directions. The aim of the
game is to stay alive as long as possible by defeating increasingly crowded
and varied waves of enemies. At the start, the craft has a million energy
units, which steadily increases while playing up to 10 million. Upon colliding
with an enemy, the bar is either partially or completely depleted.
There are different kinds of opponents, such as the Brainless Bluie, the more
advanced Red Rammer and the Red Reaper. Blue Holes launch twenty enemies at
once, Purple Nests charge the player, the Hypermatter Reactor lurks on the
screen until it can pop the player into hyperspace and the Orange Explodabomb
has a large blast radius.
The game can either be played with a single fire key or with different keys
for each direction. Support for two simultaneous joysticks has also been
included. The game consists of 15 seamless one-minute levels. At each level,
new enemies appear and the ship’s engines are upgraded to fire multiple
bullets at once. For graphical effect, there are different kinds of fading
effects to change the art style, from “No Fade” to “OMG” and “Some fade” in
between.
The game was originally developed for the Retro Remakes vector-game mini-
competition.
