The Terminator: SkyNET, available on PC DOS, is a science fiction first-person shooter. It is the last installment of the series based on the iconic The Terminator series. The game was developed by Bethesda.
### Plot
In terms of both plot and mechanics, the game is a continuation of its predecessor, The Terminator: Future Shock published in 1995. We play as a member of the resistance movement led by the legendary John Connor and try to thwart the plans of Skynet, an artificial intelligence which wants to use nuclear weapons to blast the erase the rest of the humanity.
### Mechanics
The game consists of seven extensive missions, divided into a number of smaller sections. Each of them is preceded by a detailed briefing, this time made by using the FMV technology. During the game, we visit a number of different locations in ruined Los Angeles – from the sinking submarine to the underground Skynet base. Just like in The Terminator: Future Shock, we can use a dozen of weapons. We not only move on foot but also drive a variety of vehicles. The game also features a dynamic daily cycle.
The Terminator: SkyNET is the first game in the series, which – in addition to the classic single-player campaign – offers a multiplayer mode (up to eight players in the local network). Maps in multiplayer mode are slightly modified versions of the locations from the story campaign; the main difference is the option to drive all the vehicles found on the maps. There is also an opportunity to play as a Terminator, which is characterized by greater endurance, reduced speed of movement and a characteristic, cybernetic view with additional information appearing on the screen.
### Technical aspects
The game is based on an enhanced version of the Xngine engine, used in the previous part of the series, which can now display images at a resolution of 640×480 pixels. Thanks to that, in terms of visual aspect, the game looks definitely the best among all the previous titles in the series.
### Other
The game was initially designed as an expansion to The Terminator: Future Shock, but was finally released as a stand-alone product. In the American version, the game was called SkyNET.
