BREAKING NEWS — The Ever Given has been freed! On July 7, after more than
three months in captivity, the Egyptian government finally released the Ever
Given. The ship left the Great Bitter Lakes at around noon local time and
began making its way north through the Canal. A ceremony celebrating the ships
departure was held in Ismailia as the ship passed and by late afternoon Ever
Given was spotted anchored in the Mediterranean just outside of Port Said
where it will undergo inspection for seaworthiness before continuing its
journey to its destination. One of the greatest sagas in maritime history is
finally at its end.

SHIP INFORMATION

Ever Given is one of the largest container ships in the world with a length
overall of 399.94 meters (1,312 ft 2 in) and a beam of 58.8 meters (192 ft 11
in). Its height from keel to main deck (hull depth) is 32.9 meters (107 ft 11
in). Fully laden, Ever Given draws 14.5 metres (47 ft 7 in) of water. It has a
gross tonnage of 220,940; net tonnage of 99,155; and deadweight tonnage of
199,629 tons at design draught. The ship’s container capacity is 20,124 TEU.

SUEZ CANAL GROUNDING

On March 23, 2021, the ship was passing through the Suez Canal on its way to
Rotterdam from Tanjung Pelepas when it became stuck near the village of
Manshiyet Rugola and blocked the canal. The ship ran aground diagonally after
losing the ability to steer amid high winds and a dust storm. The owners were
told by the Suez Canal Authority that the ship “was suspected of being hit by
a sudden strong wind, causing the hull to deviate from [the] waterway and
accidentally hit the bottom” The ship ended up with its bow wedged in one bank
of the canal and stern nearly touching the other.

The ship had been running fifth in a northbound convoy, with fifteen vessels
behind it when it ran aground. Traffic in both directions was blocked for just
over six days, leading to a traffic jam of over two hundred vessels. Eight
tugboats worked to re-float the vessel in collaboration with a Komatsu
excavator removing sand from the side of the canal where the bow of the vessel
was wedged.

Aided by high spring tide, the ship was partially freed from sediment and re-
floated on March 29th, apart from the bow, which was still stuck. The ship was
finally freed from the edge of the canal later that afternoon. After the canal
had been checked for damage, the Suez Canal Authority informed shipping
agencies that shipping was to resume. Ever GIven was moved to the Great Bitter
Lake and anchored, and on April 13th, canal authorities announced that the
ship had been seized on court orders until the owners paid $900 million in
damages.

The International Chamber of Shipping, which played a part in the
negotiations, welcomed the news – and the consequent relief for the crew. “We
are grateful for the sake of the ship’s crew that the parties have reached a
successful settlement,” said Guy Platten, secretary general. “You cannot put a
price on the wellbeing of seafarers. The Ever Given crew are now free to
continue their vital role in the global supply chain and also travel home to
their loved ones after three months of uncertainty.”

Pointing to the “vital role seafarers play”, he added: “The Suez incident cost
$5.1bn a day in world trade, however, this was a drop in the bucket in
comparison to the financial and emotional costs that the entire industry has
been having to deal with due to the draconian travel restrictions imposed on
seafarers by all governments. Now that the Ever Given issue has been
successfully concluded, we must not forget the 1.5 million seafarers across
the world.”
