SSX (short for Snowboard Supercross) is a sports game dedicated to professional snowboarding, released as one of the PlayStation 2 starting titles. The game was created in Electronic Arts studios and is the first EA Sports Big production dedicated to extreme sports.
### Mechanics
In SSX we take part in an exciting snowboard competition, taking place in several different, fictional locations, such as Snowdream, Elysium Alps, Tokyo Megaplex, Mesablanca or Merqury City Meltdown. The game is purely arcade, and each of the available routes is filled with a number of ramps, rails, hills and other facilities, the proper use of which allows to perform a whole range of spectacular, truly cascading tricks. Some of them are based on actual snowboard tricks, but the vast majority of them are tricks that in the real world would rather not be possible to move. In addition, the execution of scoring evolutions charges a special afterburner, which allows for temporary, supernatural acceleration of the player.
While having fun we compete for the best time and place at the finish line, but the key to success is not only the ability to drive fast and smoothly, but also to combine it with the most effective evolutions. During the competition we can forget about fair play rules and help each other e.g. by pushing opponents from the route. There are eight players from different countries, each with strengths and weaknesses, as well as a unique set of snowboard tricks. Initially, however, there are only four available, while the remaining ones are obtained with the progress of the game.
### Game modes
SSX offers a single player career mode as well as the ability to compete in two on one console.
### Technical issues
Released on PlayStation 2, SSX features a full-size, high-fluid 3D graphics that harness the potential of the Sony console. Also worth mentioning is the dynamic soundtrack typical for EA sports games, which – interestingly – changes depending on the player’s actions while driving.
