## Description
_Rio 2016: Diving Champions_ is an official mobile game for the 2016 Summer
Olympic Games held in Rio, Brazil. It focuses on a single sport: diving. There
are two parts to the game: Qualification and Tournament. In the Qualification
mode players go through several levels with multiple events to gather points.
With a certain amount of points it becomes possible to join the Tournament
mode to compete against the scores of other players worldwide and help to
contribute to your home country’s global ranking. After the tournament more
points need to be gathered through the qualifications to enter again.
Each qualification level consists of five stages with different heights. The
player’s character, shown from a side view, needs to perform the jump shown at
the start. This is always a type of rotation along with three stances: tuck,
pike or straight. Only tuck is available at the start and the others are
unlocked later on. There is also a starting stance to unlock: backward.
Rotating is done by tapping, holding and releasing to end up with the correct
rotation. When rotated too far, this can no longer be corrected, but when the
required rotation has not been met quick taps can still be used. The jump
receives a rating from five judges with points from zero to ten. The result is
usually based on how straight the diver lands in the water. The stances change
the rotation mechanic slightly and some of them add a multiplier to the
points. Up to three stars can be earned per jump and sometimes there are extra
challenges with rewards.
The game is free-to-play and does not have an energy/stamina system, but uses
rubber ducks as a currency. Ducks are earned by great jumps and through in-app
purchases. They are used to access a retry in the qualification mode as a
single failure has the player to go through all levels again from the start if
no ducks are spent. Levels are unlocked gradually along with additional
characters. These characters have special powers such as dragon, a fireball or
slow motion, but powers require ducks to use them. Some characters cannot be
unlocked and need to be purchased. When unlocked, the three stances can be
chosen before the dive, but sometimes ducks need to be spent as well.
The tournament mode consists of two matches with four players in total to win
one of the three medals. Each match consists of three jumps and the one with
the most points goes through from the semi-final to the final.
