Morton Subotnick’s Playing Music
This is the 4th title in a series by contemporary composer Morton Subotnick
which focuses on teaching children about music. Through the use of videos,
interactivity and games, Playing Music introduces kids to the power of
expression with a “Listen, Look and Make It So” concept.
To navigate through the various exercises, players use a point-and-click
interface. The gameplay is divided into 5 games. The first game involves
listening to a piece of music played in two ways and then choosing which one
meets the criteria. In the second, the player will listen to an excerpt of a
composition and correlate it with images (a bouncing ball, for instance).
Other games include listening to music and finding the missing elements in the
written score.
Features include a glossary of musical terms and symbols, over 20 pieces of
music by famous composers, the ability to create original compositions and
copyright them. Original music can be played in the auditorium on stage or
listened to from an audience’s point of view. In addition, there are several
in-game characters to critique your creations for content, expressiveness and
originality.
