In Karryn’s Prison you play as Karryn, the new female Chief Warden of a notoriously lenient prison that has just rioted. Will you subjugate the rowdy inmates through force, or will you be subjugated yourself as your resistance towards their nonstop se***al advances start dropping?
Shape yourself and the prison the way you want to with the Edicts system! Struggle against se**al advances with the Willpower and Desire system! Become more and more vulnerable to sex with the Passives system! The current alpha version has gameplay up to the boss of Level 1.
We All Play These for the Story
In all honesty, the writing in this game is painfully cliché. The premise could have come from any basic porn from the last 30 years. Outrageously curvaceous Karryn is the newly appointed warden in the most s*x*ally charged prison to ever be conceived. A riot has recently broken out and it’s her job to keep order by beating both prisoners and her own subordinates into submission or failing to do so and falling victim to their intensely aggressive se*ual advances.
This along with the faceless characters, the shockingly bland dialogue options, the 2 styles of encounters comprised of 3 positions sell the feeling that this is a sex game built around an isometric dungeon crawler. The two sides of this are not of equal weight as the dungeon crawler aspect, thanks to its skill tree style “edict system”, is far more fleshed out than the adult aspect, which is lacklustre at best.
Edicts system
The Edicts system is a reskinned RPG style skill tree which controls the general state of the prison. It involves meticulously managing resources in order to improve the state of the installation and increase the overall level of control that Karryn can exercise. However, the upgrade tree does not follow a straightforward path of making Karryn stronger relative to the other guards and inmates as the system is upgraded. On the contrary, many of the initial options add debuffs to Karryn’s stats, making it more difficult to get to the final upgrades. Which in its own way, makes a certain level of sense as the game still becomes more difficult with time; satisfying the players need for a challenge.
The system is crafted to encourage players to engage with the games own mechanics for replay value. However, there does not seem to be any particular reward to losing that players do not already have access to while playing. Being awarded titles, which add certain buffs and debuffs to Karryn’s stats once a run is completed, definitely add to the overall replay value, but I did not find them to be a sufficient reward for finishing the game.
A Double Scoop of Vanilla
Karryn’s Prison lacks range in its adult themes in general. It very much felt like the same sex with nearly identical enemies, that along with the lack of value attributed to those sections lead the game to quickly become repetitive. The title is shallow compared to games like Liliths Throne, a title that encouraged s*x*al diversity and representational freedoms, something I found helped replay value.
Audible Choices
The pinging sound when selecting options in any of the menus is jarring and quickly gets difficult to listen to. The music is fairly varied; comparing exploration music to battle music, but it is incredibly reminiscent of standard JRPGs and is in no way particularly interesting or memorable.
Pros
- Interesting take on the JRPG genre with an erotic twist
- The Edicts system makes for interesting and diverse gameplay options
Cons
- Repetitive gameplay
- Uninspired artwork
- Annoying sound design
The bland adult content is overshadowed greatly by the aggressive means in which it is acquired making it blatantly apparent that this is not a game about sex, it’s about power. If that is what you’re after in your isometric JRPGs, then Karryns Prison is your one stop shop for that specific fantasy.
