Horizon Chase – World Tour
Horizon Chase: World Tour is a race game inspired by classics like Outrun,
Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 and Top Gear. It is in full 3D, but uses a classic
mechanic of a horizon at a fixed distance, the track in the bottom part of the
screen and the car in the centre. There are 73 races organized in eight cups
in countries all over the world: Brazil, Chile, Greece, Iceland, India, United
Arab Emirates, USA and so on. Each country consists of four cities. They have
different themes and there are also different weather conditions. Seventeen
types of sports cars can be unlocked and a currency earned through races can
be used to upgrade the car statistics: acceleration, fuel, handling, nitro and
top speed.
The cars are controlled with a wireless controller or a virtual D-pad in the
bottom left corner of the screen to steer left and right. On the right side
there is a virtual button to accelerate. The car will drift slightly and
automatically in corners with enough speed, there is no separate control
required. Above the buttons on the left there is a limited amount of nitro to
gain additional speed. Races typically take multiple laps with a large pack of
racers (about twenty) as well as regular traffic. To keep progressing and
unlock new races, top three places are required. Cars have a fuel meter and
fuel pick-ups need to be collected regularly to stay in the race. At the end
of a race the remaining fuel is converted into bonus points. There are also
race tokens as pick-ups for bonus points and nitro refills. The car cannot
have permanent damage, but slows down significantly when colliding with other
cars from behind or with objects in the environment. By reaching score goals
bonus races are unlocked. Based on the results in bonus races upgrades and new
cars are won.
The game is free, but only offers a small portion. The full game needs to be
unlocked through a one-time in-app purchase. Through a Facebook connection
friends can be challenged for the fastest times.
