From Sega’s legendary AM2 division (Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA, OutRun) comes Ferrari F355 Challenge, a detailed and intensely realistic simulation of one of the greatest sports cars ever constructed. Get behind the wheel of the Italian dream machine and compete against fellow professional F355 drivers on some of the toughest circuits in the world. Although the game started life as an arcade title, it’s widely recognised as the most punishing-yet-ultimately rewarding driving game ever created – this is not racing for the faint of heart.
If it all sounds a bit much, then don’t worry; instead of throwing you straight in at the (very) deep end, F355 is a very much a learning experience, initially leading you by the hand until you’re able to drive on your own four wheels. Perhaps the most useful form of initial driving aid are the four assist functions that ensure you don’t oversteer or misuse the brakes during your early runs on the track. While Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Braking System and Intelligent Braking System will certainly benefit beginners, you’ll soon seek to try your luck without these virtual stabilisers.
Thankfully, the Arcade mode features a Training option which allows you to race alone, save for the company of an extremely helpful racing line to guide you along your way. Once you think you’ve got hold of the basics, it’s time to move onto Driving, which removes all of the visual aids, but still leaves you on your lonesome to practice. When you’re finally confident that you’ve got what it takes to leave other racers eating your dust, head onto Race and give it your all against the highly intelligent computer opponents.
It doesn’t end there, however, as there’s still the Championship and Great Driver Challenge modes to contend with. The former option takes Arcade to a whole new level of difficulty, giving you the choice of three six-race competitions. Needless to say, if you struggle to earn victory in a single race, this will really push you to your limits. Great Driver Challenge takes your need for mid-race proficiency even further by awarding you points for displaying excellent driving techniques and stripping them away for crashes.
