In this expansive world, your limits and creativity will be tested against the biggest and most ruthless baddest enemy Far Cry has ever seen. It’ll be wild and it’ll get weird, but as long as you keep your wits about you, the residents of Hope County can rest assured knowing you’re their beacon of hope.
Far Cry 5 (stylized as FARCRY 5) is the fifth numerical game in the Far Cryseries. It was released on 27 March 2018 worldwide for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, USA
Similar to its predecessors, Far Cry 5 is an action-adventure first-person shooter set in an open world environment which the player can explore freely on foot or via various vehicles. Unlike previous titles in the series where the player takes on the role of a set character, the game gives the player the opportunity to customize their character’s appearance. The player has a variety of ranged and explosive weapons to fight against enemies, with the game placing a renewed emphasis on close-quarters combat compared to previous Far Cry titles by introducing a wider range of melee weapons. In addition, Far Cry 5 features a new weapons ballistics system that includes elements like a bullet dropping over a distance to make it more realistic.
Creative director Dan Hay described the design of the open world as being modeled on the outposts from previous titles in the Far Cry series. These outposts represented a small section of the map occupied by enemy forces and the player was tasked with liberating them by killing or neutralizing the enemy presence. The outposts were designed with multiple approaches for the player to take and it was this element that the development team tried to recreate in the wider game world of Far Cry 5. The player is dropped into the game world with little context, direction or objective markers and is instead required to navigate the world on their own. Hay expressed a desire to create what he termed the “anecdote factory”, a game where two players could venture out from the same point in opposite directions and have completely different experiences that they would then share with one another anecdotally. To assist with this, most of the game world is accessible to the player after completing the game’s introductory missions and they are free to advance through these areas as they choose; by comparison, previous titles in the series gradually opened up the game world to the player with story missions guiding their progress through open areas. Completing actions within a region earns the player “Resistance Points” which cumulate to trigger major story events. These Resistance Points also contribute to the “Resistance Meter”, which divides each region into three tiers represents the region’s relative level of difficulty. For example, on entering a region for the first time, the player will encounter basic enemies; however, as the Resistance Meter increases, the player will run into a wider variety of enemy archetypes, culminating in aerial patrols and airborne asssults.
The game also features a recruitment system in which the player can recruit locals in the county to fight alongside them similar to the “Buddy” system used in Far Cry 2 or the “Guns for Hire” system in Far Cry 4. In this Guns for Hire system, the player can recruit locals to join their cause at which point they will fight alongside the player. In addition to these Guns for Hire, the game also includes “Specialists” or non-playable characters with their own unique skills and personalities. The recruitment system replaces the beacon system used in previous titles. For example, Far Cry 3 featured radio towers and Far Cry 4 featured bell towers that the player had to climb in order to open up parts of the map and various activities in the region. Far Cry 5 removed this system and instead relies on the player forging relationships with other characters to discover story missions, events and other characters.
The player has the ability to tame wild animals through the Specialists, which is based on a system that was previously introduced to the series in Far Cry Primal. The tamed wildlife will assist the player in combat and follow the player’s orders. Different wildlife have different combat patterns. A fishing mechanic was also introduced and a variety of fish can be caught. The campaign can be played individually or with a partner through the game’s cooperative multiplayer mode known as “Friends for Hire”.
Multiplayer
Co-op
Co-op is an available in Far Cry 5, but it works differently than before. In this game, players can open their gameplay session to friends who can then join them at any time. This works on XBox Live, Uplay, and PSN. Joining a friend can be done after after both players have finished the missions on Dutch’s Island in their own game. Cross-platform play is not available in Far Cry 5, so players wanting to play together will have to be friends on the same platform. To open your game for friends to join anytime, go to Options in the main menu, then Gameplay. Turn the option ‘Open In-game Party’ to On. This will allow players in your friend’s list to join your game without a direct invitation.
To specifically invite a player, they must be on the host’s friend’s list. Go to the in-game menu (the one with Inventory, Roster, etc.) and choose the second to last icon at the top. This will bring up the Online options. Use the option ‘Invite Friends’ on the right, then select a player from the Friend’s List and invite them. Players can co-op through the rest of the campaign minus a little at the end. The second player can drive vehicles, fly planes and communicate with the host player. They can collect loot from their gameplay. Unfortunately, however, none of their mission progression will be saved to their character. Once they return to their own game, they will need to complete the same content themselves for credit.

The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a preacher named Joseph Seed has risen to prominence in the region. Seed believes that he has been chosen to protect the people of Hope County from an "inevitable collapse" and has established a congregation called Eden's Gate. Ostensibly, this is to fulfill his mission of leading the people to salvation; in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is a militaristic doomsday cult. Under his rule, Eden's Gate has used both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the residents of Hope County, and intimidation to keep them from contacting the federal government for help. When an attempt to arrest Seed ends with the deaths of several lawmen, the player is swept into the armed conflict between Eden's Gate and the remaining Hope County residents who are organizing themselves into a resistance movement. The player takes on the role of a sheriff's deputy who is sent to Hope County to arrest Seed. Seed has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over Hope County with the aid of his siblings, known as "the Heralds": Jacob, a former military officer that oversees their armed soldiers; John, a lawyer that has been able to acquire much of the land in Hope County for Eden's Gate; and Faith, who acts as a pacifist to bring the people to believe and trust in her older brother. The residents of Hope County opposed to Seed include Pastor Jerome, a local church leader that has seen his congregation taken by Eden's Gate; Mary May, a bartender whose father was murdered by the cult; and Nick Rye, a cropduster pilot who wants to eliminate the influence of the cult in order to build a better future for his children.

Game Analysis | Far Cry 5 uses an upgraded version of the Dunia Engine used for Far Cry 4. Playing at 1080p, locked 60 frames per second on Ultra is possible with a GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580, along with 8GB RAM and a decent quad-core processor. The system requirements are higher than Far Cry 4, but a fairly low-end gaming PC should be capable of running FC5 at Low graphics settings. Anyone with a decently clocked quad-core CPU will probably find themselves bottlenecked by their GPU. Set in remote Montana, the themes of Far Cry 5 appear to revolve around religious extremism and right wing supremacists. Ubisoft certainly isn’t pulling any punches with this one, and three years ago when development started I doubt they could have anticipated the world they would be launching their game in. | |

An amazing amount of exploration
top-tier visuals
Lacks real innovation for the "Far Cry" formula
Very similar in construction and execution to the other Far Cry games that preceeded it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but also isn’t really shaking up the formula at all. The story is decidedly dark and cryptic, but is contrasted by goofy side characters and sceanrios that totally clash with the sombre attitude of the main narrative. Ovewrall, the tone is inconsistent and the gameplay is pretty cut and paste from the old ones. Time to change things up a bit Ubisoft.

Can't play after end credits, have to restart
I played and beat it a couple months ago. Xbox Store had an E3 sale and I bought several normally expensive games that weekend. This was one of them. Anyway, I’ve played Far Cry 3 and 4, and while I enjoyed those, this one is definitely my favourite in the series. One of the best-looking games I have played in a long time, and the controls are easy to learn and use. My only real complaint is that when you reach the end, you can’t continue playing. I won’t spoil what happens, but I was going to go do the last mission real fast then continue doing the rest of the side quests and collecting things. But you can’t do that. I ended up just moving on after the credits rolled. But it felt incomplete in my mind, so I’m replaying it. This time I’ll do everything BEFORE the final mission.
Something else I loved about it is the AI. You can have up to two companions, including randomly recruited citizens. What really impressed me is that I had a specialist companion and a random citizen companion, and they were bantering back and forth together. They even called each other by name. I’ve tried different combination of companions, and it’s consistent. They must have recorded thousands of lines of just banter, because they’re almost always talking. It does repeat sometimes, but it’s always interesting to just stop and listen to my companions talk to each other.
