Bool
Bool is an early game by Mark Essen. The player needs to keep a white ball
afloat in different levels and collect yellow balls and orange squares before
running out of time or thrust power. Each level contains a number of balls and
squares, and triangles that provide an additional bar of thrust. Completing
the level is done by returning to the white starting point with all items
aboard before running out of thrust. To do so, the player needs to let go of
the controls every now to avoid waste of power and then to let the ball glide
along with the scenery. Items are collected by activating a rope that reels
them in. The environment cannot be touched directly. When this happens three
times, the game is over.
Starting from the title screen, the game’s font immediately changes into an
illegible typeface, which deliberately makes it impossible to read any of the
game commands or menu text. Finding out how to get the game to start is a
challenge itself. All letters of the alphabet are included as separate images
with the game files. By comparing or replacing the images, it is possible to
decipher it.
