The programme has been designed as an interesting and effective way for a child’s first contact with English. It contains over 30 various unstressful games aiming to introduce and revise basic words and expressions describing the surrounding world. The programme does not require testing and English (with texts read by British speakers) is mainly an excuse for good fun. Both languages, Polish and English, are parallel here – the former is used mainly to explain tasks, give commands and explain how exercises work; the latter is used by some residents of the English Land. Exercises hidden in games include mainly spoken language, do not require reading skills, although all words are also shown in writing.
In the programme a child meets many characters, games and places known from the programme The Alphabet and Learning to Read – so there will be the Bookworm and Fairy Bookletia, and most games are new versions of those the child played and enjoyed earlier. The introduction of English changes their meaning to the degree that they get a new quality, and the child does not feel lost in this varied space. A slow-witted cook making a soup will speak English this time, as will the guests of the pie restaurant or the customers in the ice-shop. The vocabulary is introduced gradually and each new word appears at least in one game as an element to practice. With the child´s progress new groups of words and games are introduced. All the time the user is accompanied by Bennie who translates all the important sentences into Polish, and a handy picture dictionary is also available.
The programme prepares the child for a more advanced English course included in the programme Bennie and Lennie – English for children. Apart from Bennie and Lennie, a character which is common for both programmes is Gorak – a funny creature who this time asks the player about the words. Bennie and Lennie – English for little ones is suitable both for children who already know other products from the series, and for those who have the first chance to meet our friendly characters.
