Aquitania is a match-three game. Using your mouse, swap two items so as to
complete a straight line of three or more of the same item. The object is to
clear the blue squares by making matches over them or using a bonus item. Once
all the blue tiles are cleared, a gem will drop onto one of the columns. You
must then get the gem to the bottom of the board to release it. This will
clear the level. Once all the gems are in place in the stage item, this will
clear the stage.

While there is no time limit, per se, the birds at the top of the board drop a
row of items every few seconds. If this row piles up to the bird then the next
time a row is dropped, that bird will die. If all the birds die, you lose a
life. Loose all your lives and the game is over. As you play, you will
encounter obstacles like chains and light blue tiles. Chains prevent the
chained item from moving. They are removed by matching the chained item or
using a bonus item. Light blue tiles must have a match made over them to turn
them into blue tiles then matched again to clear them.

There are two types of bonuses: instant and powered-up. Instant bonuses appear
at random anywhere on the board. After a time, if they are not used, the
instant bonus return to the item is was before. Instant bonuses include:

* Bomb: Destroys the eight neighboring items and one layer of tiles below them or destroys a chain.
* Arrows: Destroys all the items, one layer of tiles or chains on a horizontal row.
* Hourglass: Puts the birds to sleep for a few seconds so they don’t drop items.
* Lightning bolt: Destroys random items, one tile layer or chains.

The power-up bonuses must be activated by making matches with items the same
as the bonus, like hammers or feathers. The power-up bonuses remain once
powered-up. They can even go from one level to another. These bonuses are:

* Hammer: Destroys one chain or one item and one tile layer below it.
* Feather: Removes all other feathers on the board. Feathers start appearing if you lose a bird.
* Eggs: Restores a dead bird.
