AGRAV is a mobile game with unique controls: Forget thrusting and blasting through space with utter disregard for Newtonian physics – AGRAV’s lost space vessel is defenseless, and its path entirely determined by the whims of gravity. The upside is that gravitational forces are under your control: The instant you touch the screen, space contracts into a black hole, pulling your ship inward – the longer the touch, the stronger the pull. Place black holes with care and foresight to accelerate or decelerate your ship, and to spin it into gentle orbits around the game’s many hazards: Neutron stars that exert their own gravity, barriers and switches that demand thoughtful planning, and less than welcoming enemies, which populate the game’s abstract alien environments.
Apart from its novel mechanics, AGRAV is a love letter to gaming’s golden era. 1980s arcade classics such as Space War, Lunar Lander, Asteroids, and Tempest have served as major inspirations to AGRAV’s colorful 2.5D vector graphics. Another discernible influence is Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s Rez with its distinct art style, but also by using music to create a flowing gameplay experience. AGRAV has been scored by the game’s designer, Georg Lauteren, who is also a veteran electronic music producer and a previous IGF finalist with his music for Radiolaris’ (now Broken Rules) 2009 iOS game Radio Flare.
